Welcome to Whispering Pines Golf Club|
Whispering Pines Golf Club was born at 5:00 pm on December 17th, 2008. It was the brainchild of Larry and Joan Ropa. The club was originally going to be called The Double Eagle, however the SCGA informed them that the name was taken by an Anaheim club. After some discussion they were down to two names: Beaver Run (the name of their street) or Whispering Pines. The name was changed to Whispering Pines.
Considerable planning had been done by the Ropa's in the fall of 2008 however it was not finalized until a cold and snowy evening on December 17th. Yes, it snowed that night in Santa Clarita. Gene and Jan Bensinger, Larry and Joan Ropa sat at the Ropa's kitchen table and dotted the i's and crossed the t's on the By-Laws and Charter Members applications as Joan had to fax them to the SCGA that evening.
The first Officers were Larry Ropa - President, Tom Neumann - Vice President, Gene Bensinger - Secretary/Treasurer, and Joan Ropa - Handicap Chairman. Later in 2009 Tom Neumann withdrew due to a conflict in schedules, and the President appointed Russ Calder to replace him. Gene Bensinger had committed to only one year as treasurer and at the completion of the year Paul Stofferahn was elected treasurer to replace him.
Our club quickly grew during 2009 to a total of 44 members which included 9 couples. The inaugural tournament was scheduled for January 12, 2009 at Rustic Canyon Golf Course, however due to high winds (balls being blown off the green) it was reschedule to January 26th.
The club over the years continues to grow and in 2017 currently has 70 members! We play 12 tournaments a year at a variety of courses in LA and Ventura counties. Click on the Tournament Schedule link above to see this year's schedule. Closest to the pin and low net prizes are given at every tournament - for the men and the women and for each flight. The $50 yearly fee includes membership in the SCGA.
